Brother

He wasn’t really handsome, or terribly smart
The art in him was deeper and less obvious at the start

So those he loved dismissed him,
They couldn’t see him shine
Assuming he could never measure up and tow the line

He tried so hard to please them
He worked the extra mile
Would it have really been so much to grant him just a smile?

Father’s so frustrated, what’s wrong with this boy
He isn’t smooth or flashy
And he can’t help but annoy

Mother’s all but written off this mediocre son
She’s looking for a hero
And she’s sure he’s not the one

I myself am guilty
I also failed to care
I was so vain and self-absorbed forgetting he was there

I left him to the jackals
I left him on his own
All he wanted was a friend
And safety in his home

Now what’s to become of him
This boy nobody saw
The one who tried so hard he all but worked his fingers raw

Will he ever see his brilliance?
He’s had it since his birth
How now after all this,
Can I help him know his worth.
